Welcome to the Fear Free Veterinary Certification Program – Avian!

Many bird species live for decades longer than their mammalian counterparts. This not only provides opportunity for improvement through training; it emphasizes the importance of preventing our patients from experiencing repeated, unnecessarily stressful events over the course of their lifetime. By embracing the Fear Free approach, we have the power to not only ensure excellent health over their long lifespans, but to increase hospital revenue in a significant way.

The Veterinary Certification Program – Avian teaches you how to use Fear Free concepts to ensure that avian veterinary visits go as smoothly as possible. Video clips and slides show you how to recognize signs of stress in avian patients, how to use simple tools to provide Gentle Control, how to train cooperative behaviors and more.

All this translates into happier birds, improved client compliance, and increased revenue!

The Veterinary Certification Program – Avian encompasses nine one-hour modules, including these topics and more:

  • Recognizing stress in birds
  • Identifying fear-inducing stimuli for birds
  • Unique challenges with avian patients
  • Exam room design for avian patients
  • Staff and client education
  • Fear Free veterinary visits for untrained birds
  • Handling and examining birds safely
  • Diagnostic sample collection/procedures, hospitalization, and training within the clinic
  • Training birds to participate in medical care
  • Case studies

Questions? We Have Answers!

What does it take to become certified?

Fear Free certification requires professionals to successfully complete the online certification program. The online certification program is eight modules long with a 20-question quiz at the end of each module that a professional must receive an 80% or better on in order to move forward.

Who should become certified?

If you are a veterinary professional who would like to create a calming experience for your patients, enhance the quality of medicine in your practice, increase compliance, and improve safety for your team, the Fear Free Veterinary Certification Program is for you. Although the course is geared toward clinical settings, any pet professional could benefit from becoming certified.

Why should I become certified?

As a veterinary or pet professional, you have joined this profession to look after the wellbeing of pets. Fear Free will give you the opportunity to look after both the physical and emotional wellbeing of your patients. Your clients will realize what a difference in experience a Fear Free visit is and will start looking for Fear Free Certified Professionals. Pet owners can find Fear Free Certified Professionals in our online directory and you will want to make sure you are part of that listing!

Can practices become Fear Free Certified?

The Fear Free Practice Certification launched in April 2018. For more information on Practice Certification, click here.

Once certified, how can I let my community know I am Fear Free Certified?

Fear Free Certified Professionals will be allowed to use the Fear Free Certified Professional logo on lab coats, business cards, and the practice’s website. A RACE-approved certificate of completion can also be printed and used for display. In addition, a large variety of posters, brochures, and handouts are available for download in the Toolbox or for purchase in the Online Store.

How can I receive complimentary registration for the Veterinary Certification Program as a student or faculty member at a veterinary educational institution?

We require all students and faculty of veterinary educational institutions as well as employees of veterinary teaching hospitals to apply for complimentary registration through our Student/Faculty Application. You will receive an email following submission of this application with instructions on how to register your account.

Am I eligible for complimentary registration/renewal as a student or faculty member of a veterinary educational institution?

Students – Post-high school* educational programs for DVM, technician, and assistant are approved to apply. You will be required to upload proof of enrollment (i.e. class schedule, letter of acceptance, etc.).

Faculty – Any educational programs focused on veterinary professionals (DVM, technician, assistant) are approved to apply. You will be required to upload proof of employment (i.e. faculty ID, letter of employment, etc.).

Employees – Employment at a veterinary teaching hospital is approved to apply. You will be required to upload proof of employment (i.e. hospital ID, letter of employment, etc.).

*High school programs are not eligible to apply at this time. We highly recommend faculty of these programs to register and teach the concepts of the certification program to students. What is the purpose of a team admin account?

The admin account:

  • will be used to make purchases.
  • will be used to manage your team (enroll new team members, assign renewals, remove members).
  • does not require a membership (i.e. no additional costs are involved).
  • will not have any access to Fear Free educational courses.

Our hospital is opening a second location and want to register team members from this new sister hospital. Are we able to get the same dynamic pricing we have in our existing Fear Free Team?

Yes! Once you set up your sister hospital’s Fear Free Team, send us the Team Admin email address for your original location’s Fear Free Team as well as the email address you would like to use for the Team Admin account for your new sister location’s Fear Free Team. We will need to manually add the dynamic pricing to your new team. Please contact wags@fearfreepets.com for assistance with this. This is done on a case-by-case basis upon request.

  • Dynamic pricing is only set up initially for sister hospitals. It will not build within each group as hospitals make separate purchases.
  • Fear Free has no way of knowing or tracking when a hospital opens a new location, thus cannot automatically offer this benefit without request.
  • Dynamic pricing can be added to a sister hospital’s Fear Free Team within 120 days of the creation of that team. The dynamic pricing added will be based on the dynamic pricing available to the original location/team at the time the sister hospital team was created.
  • Fear Free will not retroactively refund dynamic pricing difference between sister hospitals.
  • If you are part of a corporate veterinary hospital group, please contact wags@fearfreepets.com for more information.
