Treats Make Vet Treatments Less Stressful—even (or Especially) in Cancer Cases

Kind hearts and hands, combined with tasty treats, cater to the emotional health of pet cancer patients during treatment at the Oncology Department at the Animal Specialty & Emergency Center in New York’s Hudson Valley.

At the hospital, Dr. Sue Ettinger (aka Dr. Sue Cancer Vet), DVM, Diplomate ACVIM (Oncology), a Fear Free-certified professional and Fear Free Advisory Group member, partners with her Fear Free-certified oncology team members to reduce an animal’s fear, anxiety, and stress during care. The group is enthusiastic and inquisitive as they explore new Fear Free techniques to use with their patients.

An easy but tasty treat option Dr. Sue found to her liking (or at least to the liking of her feline food critic)? Easy Cheese. Cheddar n’ Bacon flavor, to be specific.

“So excited my team is Fear Free certified. Here we are testing out the new cheese as a technique to make visits to the vet less stressful and even better for our patients,” said Dr. Sue as they offered kitty patient Zane Zane some palatable treats during his initial chemo treatment for nasal lymphoma.

Tasty treat options during care help improve a pet’s emotional state during veterinary treatment. A small amount of soft cheese spread is one such top treat performer among cats.

“I was so surprised kitties like this!” says Dr. Ettinger, as she and her team add yet another tasty option into their Fear Free arsenal, aimed at protecting and promoting pet emotional wellness during care.
