Fear Free Veterinary Certification Program – Equine

Fear Free and good horsemanship go hand in hand: Communication is the essence of both. Horses are large, powerful animals and injuries to equine veterinarians are common. Fear Free helps reduce injuries to veterinary staff and horses, improve the health and wellbeing of patients, save you time, create more manageable patients, and earn your clients’ lasting trust and commitment.

The Veterinary Certification Program – Equine teaches you how to use Fear Free concepts to ensure that barn visits and hospital visits go as smoothly as possible. Video clips and slides show you how to examine equine patients safely by using gentle techniques, perform routine procedures in a non-threatening way, recognize signs of stress in equine patients, help owners train their horses to cooperate in medical care, hoof care, and more.

The Veterinary Certification Program – Equine encompasses eight one-hour modules, including these topics and more:

  • Recognizing stress in equine patients via body language
  • Handling and examining horses in a way that reduces stress
  • Reducing horses’ stress during commonly aversive procedures such as injections
  • Training horses to voluntarily participate in medical care, hoof care, and more
  • Ensuring the horse is as comfortable as possible during trailer travel
  • Modifying aspects of the hospital environment to suit horses’ unique needs
  • Managing equine pain in the most effective, Fear Free way
  • Identifying fear-inducing stimuli for horses
  • Administering medications in a calm manner without a struggle

I have been so pleased at how quickly and effectively I have been able to integrate Fear Free practices into my daily work, even in areas outside of primary care. It has had a significant side effect too: happy, less stressed doctors and staff.

What does it take to become certified?

Fear Free certification requires professionals to successfully complete the online certification program. The online certification program is eight modules long with a 20-question quiz at the end of each module that a professional must receive an 80% or better on in order to move forward.

Who should become certified?

If you are a veterinary professional who would like to create a calming experience for your patients, enhance the quality of medicine in your practice, increase compliance, and improve safety for your team, the Fear Free Veterinary Certification Program is for you. Although the course is geared toward clinical settings, any pet professional could benefit from becoming certified.

Why should I become certified?

As a veterinary or pet professional, you have joined this profession to look after the wellbeing of pets. Fear Free will give you the opportunity to look after both the physical and emotional wellbeing of your patients. Your clients will realize what a difference in experience a Fear Free visit is and will start looking for Fear Free Certified Professionals. Pet owners can find Fear Free Certified Professionals in our online directory and you will want to make sure you are part of that listing!

Our hospital is opening a second location and want to register team members from this new sister hospital. Are we able to get the same dynamic pricing we have in our existing Fear Free Team?

Yes! Once you set up your sister hospital’s Fear Free Team, send us the Team Admin email address for your original location’s Fear Free Team as well as the email address you would like to use for the Team Admin account for your new sister location’s Fear Free Team. We will need to manually add the dynamic pricing to your new team. Please contact wags@fearfreepets.com for assistance with this. This is done on a case-by-case basis upon request.

  • Dynamic pricing is only set up initially for sister hospitals. It will not build within each group as hospitals make separate purchases.
  • Fear Free has no way of knowing or tracking when a hospital opens a new location, thus cannot automatically offer this benefit without request.
  • Dynamic pricing can be added to a sister hospital’s Fear Free Team within 120 days of the creation of that team. The dynamic pricing added will be based on the dynamic pricing available to the original location/team at the time the sister hospital team was created.
  • Fear Free will not retroactively refund dynamic pricing difference between sister hospitals.
  • If you are part of a corporate veterinary hospital group, please contact wags@fearfreepets.com for more information.
